Almost every guide to Komodo says the same thing: come between April and October. That advice is broadly right and increasingly incomplete. What has changed is not the climate pattern but the regulatory response to it — Komodo is now weather-gated year-round by an authority that suspends sailings when conditions warrant, in any month. Planning around that reality produces better trips than planning around a season label.

What are the two seasons in Komodo?

The dry season runs roughly April to October, with calmer seas and the widest choice of departures. The wetter months, roughly November to March, bring rougher water and fewer departures. This is a pattern rather than a measured guarantee; treat it as the shape of the year, not a forecast for your specific dates.

The trade-off is genuine. Manta activity around Komodo is strongest in the wetter months — the same months that produce the least comfortable passages. Divers who want the highest odds on mantas and travellers who want the flattest water are asking for different halves of the calendar.

Does the dry season guarantee that you will sail?

No, and 2026 made that unusually clear. Between late December 2025 and early February 2026, the harbour authority at Labuan Bajo closed sailings repeatedly across the waters of West Manggarai, with Indonesian national media reporting roughly eight consecutive closure periods before cruises resumed in early February. That much is unsurprising for the wet season.

The instructive case came in August 2026. In the first ten days of that month — the middle of the dry season — sailings to Padar Island and Komodo Island were suspended while Rinca Island continued to operate, as reported by several Indonesian outlets citing the KSOP notice. If your priority is comfortable water and the widest choice of departures, aim inside the April-to-October window and accept that individual days can still be closed. If your priority is manta activity, the wetter months are where the odds sit, and you should book a vessel and an operator you trust to make conservative calls.
