Sorong is the gateway to Raja Ampat. Independent travellers cross to Waisai by fast ferry in about two hours for roughly IDR 150,000–300,000 depending on class. Charter guests skip that entirely: the vessel collects them at Sorong harbour on arrival day and Waisai never appears on the itinerary.

Sorong is a working port city rather than a resort town, and almost nothing about its logistics is published in one place. The practical consequence is scheduling. If your flight lands in Sorong in the afternoon, the day's crossings may already have gone, and you will be looking for a hotel bed in Sorong rather than a sunset in Waisai. That is a manageable inconvenience for an independent traveller and a serious one for anyone due aboard a ship.

Charter Pickup

How a Charter Pickup Works Instead

Whole-boat charter guests do not use the ferry. The vessel positions at Sorong and collects the group directly, which removes three failure points at once: the ferry timetable, the Waisai transfer, and the overnight in between. On LASHA the sequence is:

Arrival. You land at Sorong (SOQ) and are met; the crew already has your flight numbers.
Permits. The conservation card and regency levy are handled for the guest list rather than queued for individually.
Boarding. Transfer to the harbour and aboard, with the safety briefing on boarding day.
Departure. The ship sails on the tide, and the first anchorage is reached the same day.

Because LASHA's home port is Labuan Bajo at the other end of the archipelago, the Sorong embarkation only exists during the eastern season — roughly October to April — when the ship has repositioned. Boarding outside a scheduled positioning window, whether at Sorong, Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa or Alor, attracts a relocation fee for the simple reason that the vessel must sail empty to reach you. Timing your charter onto a scheduled leg is how that fee disappears.

Charter guests: direct Sorong pickup, always. There is no scenario in which the ferry improves your day.
Resort guests on Waigeo: the ferry, with a morning flight into Sorong so you catch a crossing.
Divers heading straight for Misool: a vessel, not a ferry — southern Raja Ampat is 100–120 nautical miles from Sorong and there is no public service to it.
Tight schedules: add the buffer night in Sorong. Everyone who skips it and regrets it says the same sentence afterwards.
