There is no ferry from Bali to Raja Ampat and no single Pelni ship connecting them. By sea the distance is roughly 1,000–1,200 nautical miles: six to nine days of continuous steaming at 8–10 knots, or 14-plus days as a real itinerary. Flying Denpasar to Sorong via Jakarta or Makassar takes about seven to eight hours.

People ask this question because a map of Indonesia makes Bali and Raja Ampat look like two ends of one holiday. They are not. They are separated by the whole Nusa Tenggara chain, the Banda Sea and the Seram Sea, and the honest answer — which very few operators write down because it does not sell anything — is that almost everyone should fly. Benoa to Sorong is on the order of 1,000–1,200 nautical miles, and the shape of the route matters more than the straight line. A vessel either follows the Nusa Tenggara islands east through Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores and Alor before turning north-east across the Banda Sea, or takes a more direct offshore line toward Seram. The first is slower and more interesting; the second is faster and emptier.

Why the Pelni Answer Disappoints

Pelni's national network does reach Sorong, and its fares are famously low. What it does not do is run a single ship from Benoa to Raja Ampat. Reaching Sorong by Pelni from Bali means chaining segments through Surabaya, Makassar or Ambon on schedules that are infrequent and periodically reconfigured. Travellers who try it usually arrive with a good story and several days fewer in the water. If you are considering it, check the current Pelni schedule directly — anything written more than a season ago is likely out of date.

The karst islands of Misool in southern Raja Ampat — If the voyage itself is the point — Alor, the Banda Sea, Misool — the days stop being travel and start being the trip.

The Narrow Case

When Sailing Is the Right Answer

There is one scenario where the sea beats the sky: when you want the passage itself. A private vessel crossing from the Nusa Tenggara chain into the Banda Sea in the September–November or March–April window is not transport — it is the most remote fortnight of diving and island-hopping available in Indonesia, taking in Alor's straits, the Banda Islands' spice-town history, the sea snakes over Gunung Api's 1988 lava flow, the hammerhead seamounts at Manuk, and Misool arriving over the last three days.

That voyage prices on the long-range band: from USD 11,600 per night for the whole boat on a leisure programme, USD 12,400 with diving, five-night minimum, with the free-of-charge ladder giving up to four free places at 21–22 paying guests.
