Why the Banda Sea Only Opens Twice a Year

The Banda Sea is sailed in two inter-monsoon windows: roughly March–April and September–November. The autumn window carries the region's schooling scalloped hammerhead season, strongest in October and November. The Banda Sea is not a destination you visit for a week and go home from. It is open ocean scattered with volcanoes, most of them without an airstrip, a harbour or a mobile signal — which is precisely why it is dived from a ship that carries its own fuel, water and dive deck, and only in the months the weather permits. Which Months Work, and When Are the Hammerheads?

Two questions with one answer, because the shark season and the safe-passage season overlap almost exactly. That is not a coincidence — cooler, calmer inter-monsoon water is what brings the schools into recreational depths and what makes the passage sailable at the same time.

How Many Days Are Genuinely at Sea?

Honesty here matters more than brochure language. On the Banda section you should expect two to three nights of open-water passage where the ship runs through the dark and there is no anchorage to duck into. Guests who are prone to seasickness feel those nights; guests who are not tend to describe them as the best sleep of the trip. LASHA's 10.3-metre beam and 466 gross tonnes help — a broad, heavy hull rolls slower than a narrow one — but no wooden phinisi is a stabilised motor yacht, and we would rather write that here than have you discover it at 02:00 off Wetar.

What the ship does carry for those nights is redundancy: radar with SART, Samyung AIS, an EPIRB, iCom radio, two lifeboats and four 20-person liferafts giving 80 covered places against a maximum of 26 guests. On the Banda Sea that inventory is not marketing — it is the entry ticket.

Who Is the Banda Sea Best For?

Best for experienced divers. Manuk and the Banda Arc seamounts are current-driven blue-water sites; a comfortable Advanced Open Water diver with recent current experience gets the most out of them.
Best for travellers who want history with the diving. Banda Neira's forts, nutmeg plantations and colonial streets have no equivalent anywhere else on an Indonesian dive route.
Best for October and November travellers. If your calendar is flexible, this is the fortnight to spend it on.
Not for a first liveaboard. Start in Komodo; the Banda Sea rewards people who already know what they like underwater.

What the Banda Sea Puts on the Itinerary

The route between Komodo and Raja Ampat is not a transit. These are the anchorages that justify the sea days.

When are the hammerheads in the Banda Sea?

Schooling scalloped hammerheads are most reliably reported from September to November, with October and November strongest, and a secondary window in March–April when schools tend to be smaller. These are operator observations aggregated over seasons, not a scientific dataset, and no sighting is guaranteed.

Where exactly do people see hammerheads?

Manuk and the offshore Banda Sea seamounts carry almost all the hammerhead reporting. Nusa Laut and the inner Banda Islands are visited for reef and macro diving rather than for sharks.

What is Gunung Api famous for?

The 1988 eruption sent lava into the sea and destroyed the reef beside it. The coral that grew back over that lava flow is now one of the most-cited recovery stories in Indonesian diving, and the site is equally known for aggregations of sea snakes. The recovery is described qualitatively by everyone who dives it; there is no published scientific timeline we can quote.

How many full days at sea does the Banda Sea section involve?

Typically two to three nights of genuine open-water passage on an eastbound crossing, concentrated between the Alor group, the Banda Islands and the Seram Sea. Everything else can be broken by an anchorage.

Is Banda Sea diving suitable for beginners?

The reef and wall sites around Banda Neira and Nusa Laut are approachable. The seamounts — Manuk especially — are exposed, current-driven blue-water dives usually restricted to experienced divers, and the boat will say so rather than let a logbook be optimistic.

Can non-divers enjoy a Banda Sea crossing?

Yes. Banda Neira is a historic spice town with forts and nutmeg plantations, the volcanic islands are dramatic from the deck, and the leisure rate exists for exactly this. Diving adds USD 55 per guest per night when you want it.
