Raja Ampat Liveaboard vs Resort: Which Should You Book?

Range versus price, dives per day, group size and the geography that decides it — including when a resort is plainly the better purchase.

A resort is cheaper and calmer; a boat is the only way to see the whole archipelago. Land bases around Kri and Mansuar sit on genuinely world-class Dampier Strait reefs at a fraction of charter cost. What they cannot reach is Wayag in the far north-west or Misool, roughly 100 to 120 nautical miles south of Sorong. A whole-boat charter starts at $11,600 per night with a five-night minimum — range you pay for.

We charter a 52.5-metre vessel, so treat the recommendation here with appropriate suspicion — and then check it against the arithmetic, which is published on this site precisely so you can. There are groups for whom a resort is obviously the better purchase, and pretending otherwise would be a poor way to earn a booking.

Charter figures are LASHA’s published bands. Land-based pricing varies far too widely across Raja Ampat to quote a representative number honestly, so none is invented here.

When Is the Resort Clearly the Right Choice?

  • Two to six people, where a whole-boat charter divides badly — four guests on the entry band pay about $2,900 each per night for the same sailing that costs 22 guests $827.
  • First trip to Raja Ampat, where the Dampier Strait alone will exceed expectations.
  • Anyone who needs land — motion sickness, mobility, small children, or simply a walk.
  • Trips shorter than five nights, since the eastern charter minimum is five.

When Does the Boat Win Outright?

When your list includes Wayag or Misool. That is the whole argument, and it is geographic rather than promotional: those regions sit at opposite ends of a scattered archipelago and no day boat from a fixed base crosses that water. Add a group large enough to work the rate ladder and the economics stop looking exotic. At 22 paying guests the eastern band is $18,200 per night with four free places, which is $700 per person actually aboard — with all accommodation, all meals, all transfers between sites and the dive operation included in the one figure.

Where the per-person charter figure lands
GroupWhole boat / nightAboardPer person aboard / night
4 guests$11,6004$2,900
8 guests$11,6008$1,450
14 guests$11,60014$829
20 paying + 3 free$16,50023$717
22 paying + 4 free$18,20026$700

Park fees of $25 per guest per night and Raja Ampat entry fees of IDR 1,700,000 per foreign visitor apply on top in every case.

What About Doing Both?

It is the quiet answer that suits a lot of groups. Sorong is a long way from most places — about four to four and a half hours from Jakarta alone — so a night or two on land before boarding costs little and removes the risk of a missed connection wrecking a charter day. The arrival logistics are mapped on the how to get to Raja Ampat page, and the published bands you would be comparing against are on the 2027 rates page. If price is the deciding factor, read our budget reality check before you commit either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a liveaboard better than a resort in Raja Ampat?

Better at range, worse at price. A boat reaches Wayag and Misool, which no resort day boat can. A resort costs a fraction of a whole-boat charter and gives you land, space and the option of a rest day. Choose on which of those matters more.

How much cheaper is a resort?

Substantially. A whole-boat eastern charter starts at $11,600 per night with a five-night minimum, which is $58,000 for the vessel before fees. Land-based stays in Raja Ampat operate in an entirely different price bracket, which is why they suit small groups and couples.

Can a resort reach the best dive sites?

It can reach very good ones. Bases around Kri, Mansuar and the Dampier Strait sit on genuinely world-class reefs. What they cannot reach is the archipelago’s extremes — Wayag to the north-west and Misool 100 to 120 nautical miles south of Sorong.

How many dives a day does each give you?

A liveaboard typically fits more, because the boat moves to the site overnight and the compressor is on board. A land base spends time in transit each morning and evening, which usually costs you a dive.

Which suits families better?

A resort, if the group is small and you want land underfoot. A charter, if the group is large — at 22 paying guests the free-of-charge ladder adds four places and the per-person figure drops to about $700 a night with 26 aboard.

Can I combine both?

Yes, and many groups do: a few land nights either side of a charter breaks up the long flights and gives you a decompression buffer before flying home.

Where These Numbers Come From

Vessel dimensions, tank capacities, cabin counts and safety inventory come from LASHA’s own published specification sheet on the yacht page. Charter figures are the published 2026–2027 rate file on the rates page — the same document the Komodo Luxury charter desk quotes from, reproduced in full rather than hidden behind an enquiry form. Government fees are cited to their regulation or issuing body in the text. Anything that is an operational estimate rather than a published figure is labelled as an estimate where it appears. LASHA begins her maiden public season on 17 August 2026, so there are no guest reviews to quote yet and none are invented here. Land-based pricing in Raja Ampat spans homestays to high-end resorts and is not quoted here, because a single representative figure would be misleading. Figures checked 1 August 2026.

Plan This With the Charter Desk

If a resort suits your group better, the desk will say so — the wrong charter helps nobody. Every LASHA Phinisi Cruise booking is handled by Komodo Luxury, the vessel’s official marketing and booking partner — an operator working Indonesian waters since 2015 and part of Juara Holding Group. Send your month, guest count and how many of the party dive, and you get a written quotation drawn from the same rate bands published on this site, with every separately billed item listed before anything is paid.
