How Early Should You Book a Komodo Liveaboard?

Is there an official deadline for booking a Komodo liveaboard?

No. Nothing in the park's published rules sets a minimum booking lead time for a vessel, and any guide quoting a fixed window of weeks for park registration is repeating something that does not appear in an official source. What is documented is the reservation system itself. The Ministry of Forestry launched SiOra, the park's integrated e-ticketing and reservation platform, in July 2025, and the launch announcement referred to a circular recommending that visitors reserve the day before arrival — not weeks ahead.

Separately, a daily visitor quota of 1,000 people was announced by the Ministry of Forestry from 1 April 2026 and widely reported in Indonesian media, with the quota scheduled for periodic evaluation. Treat it as the reason to reserve rather than as a countdown clock: the limit applies to a day's entries, so it bites hardest on the dates everyone else wants.

What actually runs out first?

1. The date on the vessel. LASHA charters whole-boat only — no cabin is sold separately — so a booked night is a booked night. There is no "one cabin left" fallback.
2. Seats into Labuan Bajo. Most guests connect through Bali or Jakarta, and a charter that starts the same day as a connecting flight has no margin.
3. Peak dates. Expect demand to concentrate around public holidays, school holidays and the dry-season months.
4. Programme planning. A diving charter carries a supplement over the leisure rate and needs the programme agreed in advance, not assembled on the pier.
5. Park entry on the day. Under the quota system, entry is a reservation rather than a walk-up.

Who controls what, and when is it actually confirmed?

The fourth row is the one that surprises people. No amount of early booking secures the last item; it is issued by the harbour authority against conditions on the day.

How far ahead does the season push you?

Komodo's dry season runs roughly April to October, and manta activity is strongest in the wetter months — so the "best" month depends on what you came for, and the two answers do not overlap neatly. The published Komodo route band on this vessel carries a two-night minimum, with a two-day, one-night charter and a single-day charter of up to sixteen hours offered as shorter formats. Short trips therefore stay comparatively easy to place.

Long-range expeditions are a different exercise. Raja Ampat's settled window is October to April, and the Banda Sea crossing has only two windows a year, March–April and September–November; operators avoid the passage outside them. A route with two annual windows and a five-night minimum has to be planned on a longer horizon than a Komodo charter, simply because fewer possible dates exist.

Does booking earlier protect you from a weather closure?

It does not, and this is where honest planning beats optimistic planning. Sailing to the park has been suspended repeatedly on weather grounds. Indonesian media counted roughly eight consecutive closure orders between late December 2025 and the end of January 2026, and the park authority extended a tourism closure to 1 February 2026. Closures are not limited to the wet season: in August 2026, in the middle of the dry season, sailing to Padar and Komodo was suspended for several days while Rinca continued to operate.

Two lessons follow. First, the widely repeated "April to October is safe" framing is out of date; the water is effectively weather-gated all year, and status can change at short notice, so verify with the harbour authority and your operator before departure rather than assuming. Second, partial closures are common, which makes an itinerary that can be re-ordered worth more than one locked to a single island. Since early 2026 the same authority has also restricted tourist-vessel movement at night across ten stretches of water identified as hazardous, including the Padar and Molo straits, so a route is built around anchorages that can be reached before dark.

What should you lock, in what order?

1. Dates. The moment your travel dates are firm, put them to the charter desk. On a whole-boat vessel this is the only genuinely competitive step.
2. The written quotation. Rate, guest count, route band, inclusions, any diving supplement and the entrance-fee line should all be on paper. Deposit and cancellation terms are issued in writing with the quotation — do not work from a number you read elsewhere.
3. Flights, with a buffer. Arrive the day before boarding. This removes the most common single point of failure in a short itinerary.
4. Park reservation. Handled against your specific visit dates through the official platform. Your operator will normally do this, but confirm who is doing it.
5. Insurance and a plan B. Assume at least one day may be re-routed, and agree in advance what happens if it is.

What this means for your trip

Book as soon as your dates are real — not because a rule says so, but because a whole-boat charter has exactly one buyer per night, and the surrounding logistics of flights, park reservation and harbour clearance all resolve against those dates. Beyond that, extra months of lead time buy very little. What buys resilience is a buffer day on arrival, a route that can be re-ordered, and terms you can read.
