Most charter enquiries we handle for LASHA start with the same question: how many days do we actually need in Komodo? The honest answer depends on three things — how far into the park you want to sail, whether mantas and drift snorkelling matter to your group, and how much of the trip you want to spend at anchor rather than in transit. This guide breaks down each lasha boat trip format: what each one realistically covers, who it suits, and how the pricing works. Three formats, one vessel

Every format below runs on the same ship with the same crew standard. The difference is purely range and pace. Distances inside Komodo National Park are real: the headline sites are spread across a marine park of more than 1,700 km2, and a 466 GT vessel plans around tide windows and ranger-station hours, not around a brochure.

Site order on any given departure follows park regulations, ranger-station schedules and sea state. A good captain treats the list above as a menu shaped by conditions, not a fixed script — the detailed route logic lives on the itineraries page.

The day trip: Komodo in one long day

A day trip on a 52.5 m phinisi is a different proposition from a day trip on a speedboat. You trade raw transit speed for space: four decks, a shaded Main Deck dining area, and room for 26 guests to spread out between stops rather than sitting shoulder to shoulder for the crossing. The classic day-trip pattern departs Labuan Bajo early, puts you on the Padar ridge for the three-bay panorama, then moves to a ranger-guided dragon walk — Loh Buaya on Rinca or Loh Liang on Komodo Island, depending on the departure. Lunch is served aboard between sites, and there is usually time for one swim or snorkel stop before the run home.

What a day trip cannot honestly deliver is the far side of the park at leisure. Manta Point on a strong current day, or a slow afternoon on the Taka Makassar sandbar, belong to the overnight formats. If your schedule only allows one day, take the day — Padar and the dragons alone justify it — but book the earliest possible departure.

2D1N: one night at anchor changes everything

The single biggest upgrade in Komodo is not a longer site list; it is waking up inside the park. A 2D1N charter anchors overnight in a sheltered bay, which means you reach Padar at sunrise before the day-trip fleet arrives, and you see the park's second act: dusk light on empty hills, fruit bats crossing the channel, a sky with no light pollution. Day two typically adds Pink Beach, the Taka Makassar sandbar and — when tides cooperate — a pass over Manta Point, where reef mantas feed in the current.

One night also means you actually use the vessel. For couples and small groups, 2D1N is the value sweet spot: most of the marquee sites, one full evening aboard, and a second sunrise most visitors never see.

3D2N: the full circuit at expedition pace

Three days and two nights is the format we recommend to anyone who asks what LASHA was actually built for. The extra day removes every compromise: the north of the park (the Gili Lawa anchorages and their ridge-top sunset views) and the marquee central sites fit into one route without a single rushed stop. Snorkellers get multiple windows instead of one, which matters in a park where visibility and current shift by the hour. Photographers get golden light at anchor twice.

The pace is the point. On a 3D2N departure the ship moves during meals and downtime, so nearly all daylight hours are spent at sites rather than in transit. Evenings run long on the Top Deck; the galley serves full-board throughout. With 22,000 litres of fresh water and 12,000 litres of fuel capacity, the vessel is engineered for multi-day autonomy — three days in Komodo uses a fraction of her expedition range, which is exactly why the ride feels unhurried.

Which format fits which group

A quick planner's rule of thumb. Choose the day trip if you are anchored to a Labuan Bajo hotel booking, travelling with children under six, or connecting from a cruise call. Choose 2D1N if this is your first time in Komodo and you want the classic highlights with one night at anchor. Choose 3D2N if snorkelling or photography is a priority, if you are marking an occasion — a birthday, an anniversary, a company retreat — or if your group is large enough that the ship itself is part of the destination. Groups of 14 or more almost always report the 3D2N as the better spend per person: the fixed costs of a whole-boat charter dilute quickly across guests and days.

Private charter: the whole boat, up to 26 guests

Every LASHA departure in Komodo is a private whole-boat charter — there are no shared-cabin sailings. That means your group of up to 26 guests sets the tone: a multi-generational family across all 10 cabins, a wedding party using the Top Deck for the event, or an executive group splitting days between sites and working sessions in the air-conditioned saloon. The four-deck layout (Lower, Main, Upper, Top) separates sleeping, dining and lounging zones cleanly, so even a full manifest never feels crowded.

Charter pricing scales with format and season within the Komodo rate band published on the rates page — we deliberately do not quote Komodo numbers in articles because the band is maintained there as the single source of truth. For context, LASHA's long-range expedition band (Raja Ampat, Banda Sea, Wakatobi, Maratua) starts from USD 11,600 per night whole-boat with a 5-night minimum; Komodo departures sit below that band.

The vessel behind the trip

Format choice matters less than vessel choice, so know what you are boarding. LASHA is a registered sailing vessel launched in 2023: 52.5 m length overall, 10.3 m beam, ironwood (ulin) hull with teak joinery, built in the Buginese tradition.
