Marketing photos look similar across the Labuan Bajo fleet. Specifications do not. Five criteria separate the categories quickly:

• Ensuite cabins. Count them and check the guest cap. A vessel carrying 26 guests in 10 ensuite cabins delivers a different trip from one sleeping the same number in shared bunks.
• Crew-to-guest ratio. Ultra-luxury vessels staff generously; budget boats run skeleton crews. Ask for the number in writing before you pay a deposit.
• Dive deck. A dedicated dive deck with gear stations means the schedule is built around diving, not squeezed onto a swim platform.
• Whole-boat vs per-cabin. A whole-boat charter gives you the itinerary, the pace, and the passenger list. Per-cabin sailings cost less per person but fix your route and your company.
• Safety equipment. Liferaft seats should exceed the guest-plus-crew count, and the bridge should carry radar, AIS, and an EPIRB as a minimum. A well-run operator answers these questions without hesitation.

What are the four categories of Komodo liveaboard in 2027?

1. Ultra-luxury phinisi (whole-boat charter)

Traditionally built wooden phinisi in the 40–55 m range, sold as private charters rather than per-cabin tickets. Expect ensuite cabins throughout, multiple decks, indoor dining, and expedition range beyond the national park — Raja Ampat, Banda Sea, Wakatobi. 2. Classic phinisi (per-cabin or charter)

The largest category out of Labuan Bajo: wooden boats with genuine character, sold per cabin or as smaller charters. Quality varies more here than in any other class — cabin sizes, crew ratios, and safety fit-out range from excellent to minimal — so apply the checklist above line by line rather than trusting the category label.

3. Steel-hulled dive boats

Purpose-built steel vessels running fixed dive itineraries, typically sold per cabin. Internationally operated fleets such as Aggressor represent this class, alongside long-running Indonesian equivalents. The appeal is dive-first scheduling and the sea-keeping of a steel hull; the trade-off is a ship-like atmosphere and fixed departure dates rather than a private itinerary.

4. Budget share-cabin boats

Short two- and three-day trips out of Labuan Bajo with shared or basic private cabins. They serve a real purpose — seeing the dragons and Padar on a backpacker budget — but comfort and safety fit-out vary widely. Verify liferaft capacity and licensing before booking; the cheapest ticket in the harbour is rarely the best-run boat.

One honest limitation: like every wooden-hull phinisi, LASHA carries no active fin stabilizers. Inside the sheltered Komodo archipelago this rarely matters, but on open-sea crossing days — Banda Sea and Maratua legs especially — you will feel the ocean. Guests who are highly motion-sensitive should weigh the steel-boat category or keep to Komodo routes.

How much does a luxury Komodo liveaboard cost in 2027?

LASHA sells whole-boat only — there are no per-cabin tickets. Published 2026–2027 rates:

• Komodo leisure charter: from US$10,800 per night for up to 14 guests, minimum 2 nights, with tiered rates up to roughly US$17,000 at the full 26-guest capacity. Komodo departs Labuan Bajo year-round.
• Komodo dive charter: US$11,600 per night — the dive supplement works out at US$55 per guest per night, a per-person equivalent of about US$825 in Komodo and US$880 in Raja Ampat.
• Long-range expeditions (Raja Ampat, Banda Sea, Wakatobi, Maratua): leisure from US$11,600 and dive from US$12,400 per night, minimum 5 nights. Raja Ampat runs October–April from Sorong, covering Wayag, Piaynemo, and Misool.

When should you cruise Komodo or Raja Ampat?

Komodo runs year-round from Labuan Bajo, so a 2027 charter fits any month. Raja Ampat is seasonal — October to April, departing Sorong for Wayag, Piaynemo, and Misool. If your dates fall between May and September, book Komodo; between October and April, both routes are open and the 5-night Raja Ampat expedition becomes the strongest argument for a longer charter.
