Can You Board a Komodo Liveaboard in Bali?

No — and this surprises many first-time visitors. Search for a "Komodo liveaboard from Bali" and you will find plenty of boats marketed to Bali-based travellers, but virtually all of them — whether steel dive boats, sailing catamarans, or traditional wooden phinisi — embark their guests in Labuan Bajo, not in a Bali harbour. Bali is the international gateway; Labuan Bajo is the boarding point.

The reason is geography. Komodo National Park sits between Sumbawa and Flores, several hundred kilometres east of Bali across a series of open-water straits. At displacement-hull cruising speeds, that crossing takes roughly two days each way. A handful of expedition vessels do occasionally make the Bali–Komodo passage as a repositioning leg, but it is a transit, not a cruise: long sea days, few stops, and none of the park scenery you came for.

What Is the Correct Route from Bali to Your Liveaboard?

Fly. Direct services connect Denpasar (DPS) with Labuan Bajo's Komodo Airport (LBJ) several times a day, with a flight time of roughly 1 hour 10 minutes. From the airport it is a short drive to the harbour, where the crew meets you for the tender transfer and boarding. • You keep the whole first day. Landing before midday means boarding by early afternoon and a swim stop before dinner, instead of a rushed evening arrival.
• You build in a delay buffer. If a morning rotation is disrupted, later departures the same day can still save your embarkation.
• Tight schedule? Fly in the night before. For an exact 3D2N window, an evening arrival plus one hotel night in Labuan Bajo removes all flight risk from boarding day.
• Pack smart. Keep cameras, medication, and one change of clothes in your carry-on in case checked luggage is delayed.

Why Doesn't Chartering Out of Bali Add Up?

LASHA, like most true liveaboards, is chartered whole-boat and priced per night. Sailing from Bali would consume roughly four charter nights in open-water transit — two out, two back — before you saw a single dragon or reef. On a multi-night private charter, that is the most expensive possible way to spend your time on board.

There is also an honest comfort point. LASHA is a traditional wooden-hulled phinisi — ulin ironwood and teak, built in 2023 in the Buginese tradition — and carries no active fin stabilizers. Inside Komodo National Park, anchorages and passages are largely sheltered and calm. On long open-sea crossings, motion is felt. Flying to Labuan Bajo means your nights on board are spent in the calm waters the boat was designed to explore.
